Leon Bond and Earl DeCloux |
By: Charlie Leonard
Shortly after Brian was lost, Leon Bond wrote Renee and Doug a letter of condolence. That letter led to a relationship that has resulted in more than $20,000 in contributions from the Leon H. and Clymene M. Bond Foundation.
Like Doug, Mr. Bond is a native of Oconto. He also lost a child, which gave him great empathy for their loss. Now 103 years old, Mr.Bond is known for starting the Bond Pickle Company in 1917. The company was a major employer in Oconto County for many years, and still operates today under different ownership.
After selling Bond Pickle in 1957, Mr. Bond retired in 1960. In 1993 he established his Foundation as a philanthropic entity, giving thousands of dollars to worthwhile causes through the years.
Since that time, Earl DeCloux has served as President of the Foundation and President of the Bond Community Center. DeCloux's relationship with Mr. Bond began at age 12, when he cut grass for Mr. Bond.
When asked why he continues to give to the Brian LaViolette Scholarship Foundation, DeCloux chuckled and said, "Because he keeps asking me!" As humorous as that answer may be, it is a fundamental of fund raising.

All kidding aside, DeCloux and the Leon H. and Clymene M. Bond Foundation have sound reasons for supporting the Brian LaViolette Scholarship Foundation. They agree with its mission and excellent track record of supporting the best and brightest students in their effort to acquire a better education. "It is a worthwhile cause that invests in the future leaders of our area and state," DeCloux said.
We salute Mr. Bond and Mr. DeCloux for their vision and generosity.
